Free Online Tutorials
When I started learning shuffle dance, I was frustrated by the lack of quality beginner tutorials. That's why I've spent the last two years creating hundreds of tutorials starting from absolute Level 0. Each video includes a demonstration, clear explanation, slow back-facing breakdowns, and an open invitation to reach out with questions.
A PROGRESSIVE APPROACH TO LEARNING
One challenge I experienced—and frequently hear from others—is the lack of a clear progression plan for new shufflers. That's why I've organized my content into structured playlists, starting with basic shuffle dance information, progressing from Level 0 fundamentals through foundational moves, depth work, variations, and advanced choreography. Each level builds on the previous one, ensuring you develop skills systematically and confidently.
LEVEL 0: On Ramp
Everyone's excited to jump right into moves like the Running Man and T-Step. But here's the thing—trying to learn complex moves before understanding the basic mechanics and physical form is where most people struggle. This playlist will get you mentally and physically prepared for both shuffle moves and cutting shapes (pivot moves), setting you up for success from day one.
LEVEL 1: Foundations
Now the real fun begins! This is your introduction to the five foundational moves that define California-style shuffle dancing: the Running Man, T-Step, Charleston, Polly Pocket, and Crisscross. Each move gets the full treatment—long-form videos with slow, detailed breakdowns split into manageable steps so you can learn thoroughly and confidently.
LEVEL 2: Depth & Directionals
With the Foundational Five mastered, it's time to add variety and flow to your shuffling! You'll learn moves that break up repetitive forward motion and add visual interest to your dance. We'll also explore flat-footed cutting shapes moves and essential combos that teach you smooth transitions between your foundational moves.
LEVEL 3: Advancement Courses
Level 3 is where your dancing starts to feel more creative, connected, and fluid. You’ll build a larger movement vocabulary, work with longer 4–8 count combinations, and learn how to blend foundational moves with the depth and directional skills from Level 2. These courses are designed to improve flow, combo retention, freestyle confidence, musicality, and endurance — so your shuffle starts to feel less like separate moves and more like dancing.
LEVEL 4+
Level 4+ is for dancers ready to move beyond modern shuffle foundations into more technical, specialized training — including Cutting Shapes, advanced transitions, spins and turns, glides, faster footwork, complex choreography, and higher-impact movement.
Cutting Shapes is related to modern shuffle, but it’s a more demanding style with quicker patterns, sharper timing, and more intricate footwork. At this level, training becomes more personalized and intensive, with a focus on refining technique, building advanced coordination, and developing your own dance style.
Advanced Level 4+ instruction is available through private lessons.
